Coastal Hire | Supporting Smarter, Safer Work
π 1. Stay Alert β Use All Your Senses
- Donβt just look β listen for unusual sounds (leaks, grinding, alarms).
- Notice smells (eg gas or chemical odours) and temperature changes that might indicate risk.
π 2. Walk Slowly and Deliberately
- Rushing leads to missed hazards. Take your time and stay steady.
- Avoid running or distracted walking, especially near edges, machinery, or ladders.
𧱠3. Check Common Trouble Spots
- Trip Hazards: Loose cables, tools left on the ground, uneven surfaces.
- Slip Risks: Spills, wet surfaces, mud, and unsecured floor coverings.
- Overhead Dangers: Loads being lifted, loose materials on scaffolding.
π§° 4. Inspect Equipment & Tools in Use
- Are tools in good condition? Properly stored?
- Is hired equipment set up and operated correctly?
- Look for damaged cords, missing guards, or unsecured machinery.
π¦Ί 5. Watch for PPE Compliance
- Are all workers wearing the correct PPE for their task?
- Check for worn or non-compliant gear (eg cracked helmets, worn boots).
π§ 6. Observe Site Housekeeping
- Is the site clean and orderly?
- Materials stacked safely? Rubbish and waste removed?
- Clear signage and access ways?
πΈ 7. Document and Report
- Take photos of any issues (if allowed).
- Use a safety walk checklist to stay on track.
- Report all hazards β no matter how small.
π€ 8. Talk to Workers
- Ask: βNoticed anything off today?β or βAny areas you’re worried about?β
- Often, the best hazard identification comes from those doing the work.
π 9. Make It Routine
- A daily 5β10 minute walk can prevent major incidents.
- Combine with toolbox talks or shift handovers for better safety culture.
π Remember:
Work Safe, Walk Safe. Slowing down for a few minutes can save time, money, and lives.
